The 25-metre tall sphere is covered in 360 spinning metal pinwheels and is one of the largest public artworks in New Zealand. At the blessing, Christchurch artist Neil Dawson’s sculpture on Chaney’s Corner was described in many ways.

It was called a “dynamic new entranceway sculpture for the city” and a “symbol of our rebirth as a city”.

The artist was more down to earth.

“It is basically just a ball with some propellers on it,” Dawson said.

“It seems like such an incredibly complex thing but it is important to remember that it is a very simple thing.

“It responds to its environment in the wind and the sun. Every time someone looks at it from the road, it means something.”
