Above the abyss of the gorge of the Kasakh river is an ancient Armenian temple and monastery Saghmosavank. According to legend, Sagmosavank founded St. Gregory the Illuminator 17 centuries ago. Translated from Armenian, “sagmos” means “psalm”, “wank” – “monastery”. The name of the monastery received because of the collection of psalms, written in the monastery. In 1215, on the orders of Prince Vache Vachutyan, the Church of Saint Zion was built, which later became “overgrown” with other extensions – the Church of the Holy Mother of God, a porch and a book depository. These structures formed the Saghmosavank monastery, known for manuscript storage, which is not inferior in height to the main temple and has a beautiful interior design.
In the book repository created and copied various illustrations. On the territory of the monastery complex and the cemetery adjacent to it, many ancient khachkars were installed. Especially beautiful is Saghmosavank, if you admire it from the opposite bank of the Kasakh river that flows near it.
