Gulangyu Island, a UNESCO World Heritage island off Xiamen’s coast in Fujian, China, charms visitors with its fusion of colonial architecture, lush landscapes, and musical heritage. Known as the “Piano Island”, it features pastel-colored Victorian-style mansions, cobblestone lanes, and sea breezes that carry the melody of pianos from its many music institutions. The island’s car-free environment preserves a tranquil ambiance, while its history as a 19th-century international settlement is evident in landmarks like the Former British Consulate.
Dominating the island’s skyline is Sunlight Rock (Riguangyan), its jagged granite peaks rising 92 meters above sea level. A climb up its steep stairs rewards visitors with panoramic views of Gulangyu’s red-tiled rooftops, the glittering Taiwan Strait, and Xiamen’s modern skyline. At its summit, ancient inscriptions and a 17th-century fort remind visitors of its role in coastal defense history. Named for the first rays of sunlight that hit its slopes, Sunlight Rock is both a natural wonder and a symbol of the island’s enduring allure-a place where history, art, and nature harmoniously converge.
