The two lonely basalt cones were ideal for an impregnable castle, which was built in the 14th century. The two towers were named for their shapes – the Maiden and the Crone. The castle was used as a defence stronghold until the 17th century when it was burned down by the Emperor’s troops. The ruin attracted many people especially in the Romantic period.
