Over the rim of a basaltic maar volcano northwest of Fallon, Nevada. This is one of two volcanoes thought to have erupted in the last 1500 years. Maars are shallow, flat-floored craters that scientists interpret have formed as a result of a violent expansion of magmatic gas or steam.
