Otranto’s Bauxite field was discovered in the 1940s thanks to the random finding of a large mineral by a student of Prof. Liborio Salomi (1882-1952), professor of Natural History at the Technical Institute “O.G. Costa “in Lecce, and was officially certified a few years later by Ing. Camillo Crema of the Geological Service of Italy. For all the 1960s and 1976, when the activity was closed, Otrant’s fingers bauxite was extracted, washed, boarded in the nearby port and sent to Marghera.
