Black Rock Desert Tufa Towers

Tufa tower formations at Winnemucca dry lake, Nevada, located on the southern edge of the Black Rock Desert. The towers are situated under the former shoreline of prehistoric Lake Lahontan. Underwater springs brought calcium in contact with the alkaline waters of the lake causing the growth of calcium carbonate (tufa). This tower is 100 feet high.
