A jewel of 17th century military architecture, Fort-Louvois (or Fort du Chapus) was designed by Vauban and built at sea in 1694. Facing the commune of Bourcefranc-le-Chapus, the fortress Pertuis and more particularly the instrusions of the enemy on the Charentes coasts. Its very characteristic shape in “Horseshoe” gives it an important robustness to the assaults of the enemy and the sea. The most important damage are to deplore during the second world war by severe shelling. Restored in 1962, recovered all its splendor.
