For a 150 miles the Kansas River, also known as the Kaw, zig zags its way across the Kansas landscape from Junction City to Kansas City. Nestled in between is the tight river bend at Desoto. Over 200 years ago the Kaw Nation thrived along the river with a substantial presence in Manhattan. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 had a disastrous impact on the Kaw. By 1873 the Kaw were largely pushed out of the state that today bears its name. The film is dedicated to the memory of the KAW tribe that once navigated this river way.
