The Lagoa de Albufeira is located in the municipality of Sesimbra, in the parish of Castelo (Sesimbra). It is a place classified as a Ramsar site.
The lagoon is fed by fresh water from the streams of Apostiça, Ferraria and Aiana, and by salt water from the sea, when the dune strand is officially opened in the spring. It is constituted by three lagoons: the Great, the small and the Estacada. When it reaches the 15 meters of maximum depth, the Lagoa de Albufeira is considered the deepest of Portugal.
Surrounded by pine forest almost all around the perimeter, it has small sandy areas by the sea and on the north shore. The calm waters and the wind create conditions for the practice of winsdurf, kitesurf and sailing. Wanted by countless families with children, traffic can be chaotic at weekends. On platforms in the middle of the lagoon there are mussel farms.
Since 1987, it has been part of the National Ecological Reserve, a special bird protection area. It has excellent conditions for sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and canoeing. The beach is very popular for surfing and bodyboarding.
