Mavic 2 PRO vs ZOOM Comparison - Which is BETTER for YOU?

I spent the day in the desert flying both the Mavic 2 pro and the Mavic 2 zoom while shooting a documentary project. I wanted to see what I like better and here is …

  1. I have the Zoom and am evaluating it. It seems to me that you are locked in to the aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9, whereas on the Phantom 4 Pro you can select a better variety. I like 3:2 because that is what I use on my DSLR and am able to get that on the 4 Pro. Does anyone know if you also have that flexibility on the Mavic 2 Pro? Thanx!

  2. Really great comparison! I am looking for upgrading my DJI Spark and is seriously considering the Zoom! When filming in the mountains and rocker climbers it would be super awesome to do this from a distance. Now I have to fly very close. My only second thought is the weight as I am climbing myself and have to keep the drone in my backpack.

  3. Hi Jeven complementing my question below, my main concern has to do with a comparison that I have not seen yet for landscapes photographers like me. A comparison image quality between super high res (48 megapixeles) in M2Z versus quality image of M2P (20 Megapixeles). I am a landscape photographer and use to take very few but special images. Have you already done this comparison?

The zoom and the pro all good but . For me , DJI SHOULD HAVE DONE ONE DRONE WITH A CHANGEABLE HEAD . ONE COAST FOR THE DRONE . BUT THE NOISE FOR ME IS A BIG FACTER . AS I HAVE HORSES

  5. Hi Jeven I am a serious amateur photographer and only interested on images. Once both mavics were launched I thought that my option was "no brainer" with mavic 2 Pro but after seeing a lot of video comparisons and the fact that M2Z has the option of high resolution images now I am very confusing what would be the right option for me. I will appreciate your comments and thanks before hand.

  6. Have you testing shooting h.265 vs h.264 on these drones? I heard Philip Bloom talking about the newer h.265 got significantly cleaner footage than his older Magic’s that where just h.264. Anyway I was thinking of a Mavic 2 Zoom or cheaper Mavic Air. I have an Osmo + and shoot D-Log with -2 sharpness and -3 contrast with some Electra Polar Pro Luts and minor grading and it’s working well with some ND filters. So maybe a Mavic Air (no D-LOG?) or Mavic 2 Zoom? Or is the Mavic 2 Zoom having a loot of built in edge enchancements (sharpening) that you can’t undo?

  7. Great comparison. You're making total sense to me on this. It's still a bit of a trade off, but I'm glad you brought the post editing aspect into this. That could make or brake your decision here. Darn it, why didn't they just put the two together with the Hasselblad having the zoom also. Probably a marketing decision. At any rate, with all the extra sensors, and everything else. These two drones look like the cat's meow in this genera of drones. Marc Trainor.

  8. Hey there. What camera do you use to record your YouTube video? It's super crisp and love 4K video. Also do you use a daylight kit for videos? Thanks in advance!

  9. Yes, very well explained and I was extremely doubtful about the zoom, as I have here a pro from a friend who let me use it for 2 weeks solid…;-), but now for what I need to do – I live 6/8 months a year in South Pacific Costa Rica, Pavones, where I want to film daily the surfers and the wild life – I'm definitely going for the Zoom! Thank you!

  10. Which would you say is better for someone who would use it for family photos and videos. Like family reunions and sledding. And also just having fun and inspecting roof of house.

  11. Thank you for addressing the extra tools the Zoom gives you! I've done a lot of action videos and being able to fill the frame while keeping a safe distance from my subject is a huge benefit.

  12. Well, with the Pro version you can have cropped 4K version which has a narrower field of view having it at about 48. So you have the closer look right there. Of course, you can´t do the zoom but you could in post. For me, to be honest, it´s a no-brainer. Pro 100%. I am sure that whoever shoot at sunset or past sunset would run to buy the Pro. The Zoom, the Mavic 1 and the Air falls apart at night. Only the Pro and the Phantom 4 Pro can do some interesting shots at sunset, low light, night scenes. Again, for me, it´s a no-brainer.

  13. Let me just mention why I have chosen the Pro 2, over the Pro 2 Zoom. First, and formats, it's all in the 1" chip. I am a professional photographer, you know, the guy who used to keep changing film during a wedding, now simply shoot digital for everything. Well, here in lies the problem. Where the zoom model does have good focus for video, it lacks when photographing am image. Consider this, you shoot professionally, but you cannot afford a "full frame" camera, similar to the 1" chip in the Pro 2. You want to submit photos for publication, but they won't even talk to you because you are not shooting, "full frame". If you plan on Real Estate videos only, the Pro 2 zoom should be fine, however if you will ever have a need to shoot photos as well, be sure to ask the company how they will use the photos. For a brochure, or just photos on file, no problem, but if they plan on enlarging the print to something like what might be shown in a court room, you will definitely need the 1" chip. It is for this reason, I will be getting the Pro 2.

Just a thought you might want to consider.
