According to the U.N. FAO, 37.8% or about 14,000 ha of Mayotte is forested. 7.1% is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse and carbon-dense form of forest and had 1,000 ha of planted forest.
But between 1990 and 2010, Mayotte lost an average of 200 ha or 1.11% per year. In total, between 1990 and 2010, Mayotte lost 22.2% of its forest cover, or around 4,000 ha.
Thirty-three percent of the plant species in Mayotte are endemic (Mittermeier et al. 1999).
