The lakes of Rotorua are are used year-round for fishing, kayaking, camping, boating, sailing, waterskiing, and relaxation. Aside from being a central hub of activity in the North Island of New Zealand, the lakes of Rotorua are also a cultural hotspot, having a long history of settlement and trade.
The numerous lakes of Rotorua were formed by the volcanic activity in the area. The lakes surrounding Rotorua now have a combined surface are of nearly 250 square kilometers.
