3-image Pano with the DJI Inspire 1

Last night I got the pleasure of meeting one, if not THE, most talented night time and time lapse photographer Michael Shainblum with Michael Shainblum Photography.

Russell Preston Brown lured him out and the awesome Barry Blanchard recommended a fantastic spot to meet up. And since Archer Koch had already committed to flying non-stop all day yesterday, well, he was part of this adventure too. What a group!

Here are Michael and Russell enjoying the setting Sun while closely observed by the DJI Global Inspire 1, pre-production unit #16. This three-image panorama captures a lot of the beauty of that evening, but not nearly does it capture the excitement of Doc getting to shoot next to the super talented and down-to-earth Michael.

At one point while flying I tilted the camera down to look at the waves and I saw what looked like two ants in the water. Of course I realized that couldn\’t be; while the Inspire does send High Definition video to my iPad Air, ants usually don\’t carry tripods when going for a swim in the ocean. So I lowered my aerial photography platform\’s altitude and I saw both Michael and Russell wading knee-deep through the shallow waters, trying to get to the perfect spot – but pretty strong waves kept pushing them back. It was fun to watch them struggle with their cameras mounted on their tripods, balanced over their shoulders, looking like some weird multi-legged creatures.

Now I am all for this going to extra mile – during summer time down in Mexico! But the end of November in North California?! The water is like THIS cold (holding index finger and thumb about 1.75 inches apart). Yea, I am out!

But, this is what creativity does to you; you always want to learn, push your skills, take advantage of the opportunities, watch over a pro\’s shoulder and yes, roll up your pants and go into the cold ocean
