The first wind farm in the world comes alive! In Lasithi Plateau in Crete, the pumping of water in the past decades was through wells, through the power of the wind. Reason for this was a local carpenter ingenuity of Emm. Papadakis and his assistant Stephen Markakis to combining mechanisms and adding innovative patents (rotation in the direction of the wind) managed to create the known irrigation windmills in the mid 20th century the fired production of agricultural crops Lassithi plateau soaring. At the same time it created the first wind farm in the world, changing not only the economy but also the appearance of the area making it known for its uniqueness and beauty. Today they have left few of the twelve thousand windmills and made a great effort by the local authorities for the reconstruction and the maintenance with the method of ‘adoption’ windmills, trying to give back to the plateau lost unique identity.
