Tybo was settled in 1870 with the discovery of silver, lead and zinc and the mining boom years were from 1875 to 1877. Tybo boasted a population of 1,000 residents along with saloons, a school, a literary society, post office and newspaper office. The town was considered calm until the racial difficulties between the Irish, Cornish, Central Europeans and the Chinese caused much infighting.

In 1879, the Tybo Consolidate Mining Company failed due to difficulties in ore reduction and by the spring of 1880 town was practically dead. Numerous mining companies tried to make a profitable operation but all failed with the last major effort in 1930.
